Let me start by saying this: I love Heroes. I didn’t see the first season in it’s original run, I received the dvds as a birthday present and was instantly hooked. I loved the intricately plotted stories, the interesting characters (with the exception of ALL of Ali Larter’s characters, but that’s a different Heroes rant), and the visual effects were pretty good considering that it was a TV show.

And then season two started. And it’s just been downhill from there. Which is why when I heard the news I wasn’t that broken up about it. I’m not really sad to see this show go. I mean, yes, I will miss those characters that I initially fell in love with, but to be perfectly honest, I’ve missed those characters for a long time. Most of the characters on Heroes have had their stories drastically change, and I’m not talking about character development, I’m talking about changing the fundamentals of a character.

Peter was nerfed because the writers gave him way too many powers and then realized that there was no way that they could have any real conflict because Peter could stop anything from ever happening. At his most powerful Peter could control time and space, was invincible, invisible, could read minds, was telekinetic, was super strong, could walk through walls, control both fire AND lightning, and in case teleportation isn’t fast enough, he could also fly and run really fast. Imagine if the Justice League was one guy. Yeah, that was Peter. To compensate for the writer’s lack of foresight (read: making it impossible to make any plots make sense) Peter was passed the idiot ball a lot and suffered from severe plot-induced stupidity, meaning that there were a lot of conflicts that arose that could have easily been avoided if Peter remembered that he had a power that would’ve been useful in a previous situation. That’s right. He forgets what his own powers are. You would think someone with the powers of a god would be able to keep track of that shit. And there’s really nothing else that they could have done to save the character, because he sucked when he was overpowered and then he somehow sucked more when he lost them all.

Sylar is evil because he has self-esteem/mother issues. Why must this be complicated by “we’re brothers, no wait we’re not, now I’m good, now I’m good but pretending to be bad, now I’m bad but pretending to be good, now I have a girlfriend, now I’ve killed her, now I’m bad, now I’m amnesia, now I’m fine and I’m bad again, no wait, I wanna be good!” And as for his powers, same thing as Peter. A note to writers: TIME TRAVEL. DON’T DO IT. Which brings me to…

Hiro Nakamura. He’s certainly the cause of all this. Hiro is without a doubt my favorite character on the show which is why it pains me to have to say that he is the reason that show is now broken. By having a character that has complete control over time and space the writers wrote themselves into a corner on day one. If Hiro can go back in time and stop one thing, he can go back in time and stop all things. And it’s not as if Hiro never went back in time to change things. He did it a few times, actually. What was the only way to fix this problem? Kill Hiro. But then he got better. Oh, you crazy writers! Why would you create a character with limitless control over the space-time continuum and then make him the most likable character on the show? Of course you’re never going to be allowed to kill him!

I have much more to say on this subject, but I’m almost at 700 words and haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of my issues with the show. This will probably be a 2-3 part post, to be continued tonight/tomorrow/it’ll be ongoing.

I’ll leave with this for now: Heroes could’ve been a great show, but it was screwed way early by its own premise. I’m not broken up about the cancellation because at this point it’s not an injustice, it’s a mercy kill.

So Wednesday came and went and left most of us in shock at Apple’s audacity. That they could think that the iPad is anything close to a useful device is mind-blowing. (commercial voice) It’s an iPhone that can’t make calls! It’s an iPod Touch that is far to large to be convenient! Less memory than the average computer circa 2004! No USB! No HDMI! It’s a fullscreen, a hefty amount of that is unusable bezel, and best of all, it comes with a monthly charge! (end commercial voice)

I suppose what I’m getting at is that the iPad is an amazingly awful piece tech, one that has no place in today’s market. But is there maybe a market that it would have been a viable product? On the surface, the iPad seems like a good idea, a tablet PC. Sure, tablets haven’t really been used in a while, but Apple has a tendency to be the company that can take an idea that other companies failed at, and making them good. (ex; Apple TV. I’m looking at you, DivX) Maybe Apple could have been the company that could make the tablet a viable alternative to the laptop. But today’s consumer is at least a bit more tech savvy than the previous generation. Is it possible that the reason the iPad isn’t a hit is because today’s consumer is too smart to buy a bad piece of tech?

I don’t know exactly when the age of the geek began, but a few years back, more and more people started to learn about tech. They might not have known the smaller details like Flash compatible, or HDMI output, but they knew they wanted a big hard drive, a fast processor and a lot of ram. People knew terms like video card and wifi, pretty much everyone carried a flash drive, and everyone was constantly online. It seemed to be a much smarter, or at least a more informed consumer base. These consumers knew much more about new tech than their grandparents, parents, or even older siblings in some cases. They knew how to make smarter purchases and how to dissuade friends and family from making bad purchases.

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that we’ve become smarter. Our generation. Hopefully, because of us, companies like Apple will learn that you can’t just half-ass a new idea and expect us to be impressed. If they truly want our business and for us to be loyal customers, then maybe they should have enough respect for us to only give us their best.

Hey look, another post! This should be fun.

Thursday is quickly becoming my new favorite day for TV, but to be fair it’s got three awesome shows and one okay show, whereas my other TV day (Monday) only has 2 shows, and they air at the exact same time, so I’m forced to choose. But I’ll get into that later.

Community is quickly becoming one of the shows I’m looking forward to the most this season. Joel McHale was hilarious on The Soup, and I’m glad he’s finally got a show with a big part. His character might be my favorite pathological liar of all time. Another actor that I’m glad to see back doing something is Chevy Chase. This show is a real return to form for him, and honestly, it’s just good to know that not only is he still alive, but that he’s still an amazingly funny actor. I’m getting a vibe from this show that reminds me a lot of Arrested Development, another one of my favorite shows. There’s a lot of nested gags, and it’s very smart, very fast-paced humor. The show doesn’t alienate a certain audience either. There’s something for everyone, there’s quick, off the cuff jokes, there’s long gags that take a while to pay off, and none of it seems to be downplaying to an audience. I think the myriad of characters will keep the show relevant to anyone. If you still haven’t checked this show out, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I didn’t watch The Office when it first started. I didn’t even know what it was about, aside from the basic premise that it was people working in an office. At the time, it seemed like a really stupid idea for a show, and I had no interest in watching it at all. It goes without saying that Past-Me is fucking stupid. I love The Office. I can’t believe that they’re already in their sixth season and the episodes still feel so fresh. I would think that after five or six years they would just be phoning it in with tedious plots and obvious jokes, but such is not the case. These new episodes are hilarious, and I can say with all honesty that I’m really looking forward to not only how this season will end, but how they will get there as well.

And now I’ve arrived at the show that I think will always have a special place in my heart, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Like I did with The Office, I jumped on this show a bit late, and played catch up so I could watch all the new episodes that came out. Unlike I did with The Office, it didn’t take me weeks to get caught up with It’s Always Sunny. No, I was so obsessed with this show, I burned through 2 seasons in 3 days. I don’t think I’ve laughed harder in 19 years of life than I have in those 3 days. I seriously think I injured something. It’s Always Sunny is hands down, the funniest TV show I’ve ever, and probably will ever see. Every episode is just written so well, and while some are better than others, there are no bad episodes. To give you an idea of what happens in an average episode, I will tell you what happens in some key moments without context.

A man throws a beer bottle at a cyclist.

A car is stolen. Twice. Same car.

Two men have a cookout in the back of a moving U-Haul.

Two men nearly die of smoke inhalation in the back of a moving U-Haul.

A man barters with a gypsy over a piece of fruit.

A man fails miserably at eating a piece of fruit.

Soul Asylum’s “Runaway Train” is sung by a drunk woman to a young boy.

A man is hit in the face with a jar full of urine.

How could a show containing all these things possibly be bad?

Ah yes, the okay show would be Parks and Recreation. That is the one show I’m still a bit iffy on. While I’ll keep watching because I think Rashida Jones is a great actress, I’m still not completely sold on this show. At first it seemed like a straight out Office rip-off, but now it’s starting to become something entirely different, and I think it’s a good move on the creator’s part. Also, Aziz Ansari is in it, playing a character that is essentially himself, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

This post has already become much longer than I intended, so I think I’ll leave my rant about House/Heroes for a later date. How’s Monday sound?

In which I complain about Netflix's arbitrary qualifications for Watch Instantly status.

So yeah, the movie blog idea didn’t pan out so well, mostly because I’m lazy and mostly because it’s much easier to write about a movie that I hate, and it’s going to be very hard for a movie to out-suck Transformers 2. Apparently there isn’t nearly as much bile pumping through my veins as I thought. Were it so, I’d have written way more reviews, but as it is now, I think I’ll just write about the happenings that I read about during my daily perusing of the net, and whatever I find amusing that I see while milling around this boring-ass university.

Today, I discovered that all my beloved childhood films are on netflix. Shortly thereafter, I was elated to discover that many of them are available on Watch Instantly. I was subsequently crushed when I realized that Homeward Bound, The Land Before Time, and The Fox and the Hound are not on Watch Instantly.

What kind of sorry state is our world in when these childhood classics can’t be streamed over the internet? I pay good money for my account every week, and if I want to see the movies that made me weep as a child again as an adult, I should be able to! Mind you, they are available for rent, but fuck that. I might love those movies, but not that much. I’ve got over 70 discs sitting in queue, I can’t be troubled to rearrange it so I can watch these movies as soon as possible. I got important shit at the top (read: Battlestar Galactica Season 4.0 and 4.5). Of course, at this point, I think this would be going against my own opinion a 3rd time, so I added them to the queue. at positions 72, 73, and 74. I’m sure I’ll be seeing them some time before shit get’s destroyed real good, via Roland Emmerich’s predictions.

So since the queue is becoming a massive pile of things I mean to someday watch, I ask you, no one, what should go into the queue next?

PS: Wall-E is on Watch Instantly but Ratatouille isn’t? WTF Netflix?
